Finally, Another Hole in One!

I scored a hole in one this week as I was competing in the STPGA Senior Series event at Silverhorn Golf Club in San Antonio, TX.


I aced the 13th hole which is a beautiful short par 3 of 155 yards.  I hit a 7 iron which hit about three feet from the hole and one bounced in.


This was my sixth career hole in one and my third in competition!  My last hole in one was in 2011 at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio...what is it about San Antonio??

Great Playing Zach Slayton!

Congratulations to 17 year old Zach Slayton for firing a final round 67 to finish in a tie for 5th place in the Austin Men's City Championship.  He finished -1 for the four round event and also took low junior honors.

Top Ten Finish for Eston Duff!

Another high five to Eston Duff for his top ten finish in The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship.  Eston shot 75-75-74 in the Boys 12-13 division and tied for tenth out of 105 players.

The event was contested at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Nice Finish for Eston Duff!

Eston Duff finishes third (Boys 13-14) in the prestigious US Kids Red, White and Blue Invitational.  This event was contested at the very difficult Pinehurst #8 course and Eston was only two shots out of first place.  Next month he will be competing in the US Kids World Championship hosted at Pinehurst.

Eston Duff Finishes Second in US Kids State Championship

Congratulations to Eston Duff for finishing second in the Boys 13-14 Age Division in the US Kids Texas State Championship.  Eston is making steady improvement and is headed to Pinehurst for the US Kids World Championship later this month.



Way to go Mabrie McMahan!

12 year old Mabrie McMahan finished fifth in the Texas Oklahoma Junior Championship competing in the Girls 14-15 Age Division!  Mabrie held her own the first two rounds as she was in third place going to the final round.  Although she didn't play great the last round she played awesome competing for the first time from the longer tees this age division plays.




Zach Slayton Continues his Great Play this Summer

Congratulations to Zach Slayton for winning the 2018 Texas Oklahoma Junior Championship!  Zach won by two shots in the three round event by shooting back to back 71's.

Zach is in great company as the last two champions from Austin in this event were 1992 U.S. Open winner Tom Kite, in 1968 and two time Masters champion, Ben Crenshaw in 1970.

Congrats to my Junior Optimist Qualifiers

Congratulations to my "guys" for their great play in the World Junior Optimist Qualifier at the Wolfdancer Golf Club.  Zach Slayton won the Boys 16-18 Division by 9 shots firing an even par 144 for the 36 holes.  Eston Duff finished second in a playoff in the Boys 12-13 Division.  Both of these players qualified for the World Junior Optimist tournament at PGA National Golf Club.

In the Boys 14-15 Division, Lance Walker finished 11th.   After a slow start he fired a 73 the second round which was the second lowest score in his age division for the two days.  He will be back next year firing at them.

Sarah Rovenstine Demonstrating the Orange Whip and Power Sleeve Training Aids

Sarah is home from college for the summer and working on her swing to prepare for summer tournaments.  Sarah had a tendency to not hinge the wrists quite enough on the backswing causing her to release the club too early.  This move was limiting her potential for more distance with the driver and not allowing her to compress the ball with her irons.

Swinging the Orange Whip, which is a flexible and weighted training aid, helped her increase wrist hinge and over time will help her develop more clubhead speed.  In addition, we put the weighted Power Sleeve on her 9 iron and this added weight helped her accomplish the same items as above.  The great thing about the Power Sleeve is you can actually hit balls while using the training aid.

Both of these should be used daily for maximum benefit.

There is a similar training aid as the Orange Whip and it is called the Gold Flex.  Both the Gold Flex and Power Sleeve are available at SKLZ.com.

Mike was not loading entirely into his right side due to swinging a bit too fast going back.  This was causing him to reverse pivot and then slide ahead of the ball on the downswing.  The result was his misses going to the right of target.

The best way to get him to slow down was to have him stop at the top of his backswing and pause for a count of...one thousand one...one thousand two, then give it a little pump and finish the swing.  We had to make sure he was in a great position at the top of his swing and he accomplished that.  Note how he is fully coiled into his right side and ready to deliver a solid swing to the finish.

After the two count pause we went to a one count pause and then had him feel there was just a slight pause in his normal swing.

Give it a try, this drill works for many swing issues.

Drill to Increase Lag in your Swing

If you tend to release the club early in the downswing you are costing yourself distance and accuracy.  The symptoms of an early release could include the following shot patterns: high ball flight, thin or fat shots and generally unsolid iron shots.

If you look at the top players in their downswing, they maintain close to a 90 degree angle between the hands and the golf club as the hands approach the right thigh.  If you cast your hands from the top of the swing you will not achieve that same angle.  My experience has shown that players with very long backswings have a tendency to release the hands too early.  It's much easier to retain the angle with a more compact backswing.

In the picture below, my student (left) is demonstrating an early release.  His ID is hidden to protect the guilty.   Note how the left arm and club are in alignment prior to impact.  Compared to my picture (right) our hands are in the same location but our shaft angle is substantially different.

 

At impact is when our left arm and shaft should be in alignment!


I recommend the Pump Drill in the video below to enhance the correct feel of developing lag in the downswing which produces a strong impact position. 

Perform the drill without a golf ball first just to get the feel of retaining the referenced angle.  Make sure you don't overdo the pump, but take about a 3/4 backswing and then let the hands approach the right thigh while maintaining the angle between the hands and club.

After a few reps without a ball, go ahead try hitting balls while performing the drill using a short iron such as an 8 or 9 iron.  Your ball striking may not be great at first but with a little practice the drill will produce good shots.  Be sure and video yourself and see if you making the change.

You are now ready to hit balls with your normal swing.  You should sense your left hand (right handers) is leading the way on the downswing.

Lance Walker Scores his Best Tournament Round

Congratulations to Lance Walker for his T2nd place in the STPGA Junior Tour Spring Series Championship.  Lance is making steady progress with his game and he shot his career tournament low round of 73 in the first round!    With his focus now on playing college golf, Lance is working hard on his game and improvements are showing in all areas.

Congratulations to Mabrie and Eston!

Congratulations to Mabrie McMahan for her 10 shot victory in the AIPL 5/6 Division Girls Tournament at the Harvey Penick GC in Austin.  Mabrie has been working hard on her game and is making steady improvement in all areas. 


Congratulations is also in order for Eston Duff as he won the AIPL 7/8 Division Boys Tournament with a one under par score.  Eston has also been doing well on the US Kids Tour and has just started competing on the Texas Junior Golf Tour.

Drill to Improve Footwork and Balance

This is 9 year old Aiden Moore and he was having balance issues in his golf swing.  In particular, he was allowing his left foot to spin out causing him to fall forward to his toes after impact.

To help eliminate this issue, I teed up a golf ball just outside his left foot.  In addition I placed an alignment rod just outside his toes.  Aiden was to imagine he was standing near the edge of a swimming pool and the rod was the edge.  In this drill, he used a 7 iron and the goal was to make a swing and avoid bumping the ball off the tee by his foot and not take a dive into the pool.

Mission accomplished!

Use your "Noodle" to Improve your Swing

Sometimes the most useful training aids are right in your garage, pool or boat.  In this post I am swinging a simple foam noodle as a demonstration on how "lag" in the golf swing would appear.

Lag is the term used to describe the timing of the release of the club.  For example, if you look at pictures of TOUR professionals as they approach the impact area of the swing, you will see how the club head is behind the hands as their hand approach their back thigh area.  They still have plenty of energy stored and at the last second, bam, they release the club to the target!






To begin the process of developing lag, I am setting up with the noodle on the target side of the golf ball.  I begin the swing with my hands and arms dragging the noodle creating some nice width in my take away.  As I create width note how my torso is beginning to rotate and wind up.


                                         

The key is to get to the top of the swing and then start the downswing by a slight weight transfer to the lead leg and rotation of the hips to the target.  Note how the noodle is now "loaded" and ready to be released to the target.  In particular note the difference in my hip position from the top of the backswing to starting down. 




Here I am at approximately the impact position with the noodle.  With the noodle you can see the lag as the end of the noodle is still way behind my hands.  Obviously the noodle is more flexible than a golf shaft, but this exaggeration will help you at least feel what should be happening.  From impact there is just a free wheel feeling to the balanced finish.



The beauty of this drill is you don't need to be at the golf course nor in your golf clothes.  You could be in your driveway, back yard, pool or lake and still work on your swing!

Congratulations to Abby Cloud and the Dripping Springs Tigers Girls Golf Team!

Congratulations to the Dripping Springs Tigers girls golf team for advancing to Regionals by finishing second in their District 26-5A Championship this week.   This is team member Abby Cloud, and we are working on "swinging" the golf club back instead of rolling the wrists.  She was low scorer on the team for the second round.

Lance Walker get his First Win!

Congratulations to Lance Walker for getting his first tournament win.  Lance won the STPGA Junior Tour (age 13-14) at historic Brackenridge Park GC in San Antonio, TX.  This was his first time to shoot in the 70's in competition and only the second time since he started playing golf.  He has been working hard on his game and the improvements are showing.

Zach Slayton Participates in Media Day for WGC Event

Student, Zach Slayton participated in the Media Day event for the World Golf Championships Dell Technologies Match Play Championship.  Zach was one of a handful of junior golfers selected to join Ben Crenshaw and Sergio Garcia in hitting balls from the middle of Lake Austin onto the 13th green at Austin Country Club.  A hole in one would have been worth $1 million to local charities!


What a thrill to perform in front of Masters Champions Ben Crenshaw and Sergio Garcia!  And, U. S. Open champion, Tom Kite was on board as well.

Students using the Speed Trap

This is Joe Linsalata and Lee Siegismund during my Range Grinder Clinic at Clay/Kizer GC.  They are using the Speed Trap from Eyeline Golf to improve swing path/plane.  The goal is to make a golf swing and avoid the foam posts on the Speed Trap.  In addition, one should avoid striking the plastic base.  Striking the base would indicate the club was released too early.

This is a great training aid and I use it often with my students.



Netanel Eldridge Downswing Drill

Netanel is an up and coming junior golfer getting ready to start competing in the near future.

This drill is the "pump" drill and it helps with starting the downswing properly.  The idea is to take a backswing, then pump the club down twice before then hitting the ball.  You should feel you trail elbow coming close to your side as you gently shift your weight to the front leg as you pump.

This drill will prevent the over the top move so many golfers make.



Eric Magnusen Impact Drill

This is Eric Magnusen working on one of my favorite drills.  In this drill the idea is to "ring the bell" or hit the pole at 50-60 yards.  When the ball hits the pole it "chimes" hence "ring the bell".   With a 9 iron, play the ball back in the stance and position the hands in the middle of the front thigh.  Make a small backswing and try to strike the ball first, then take a divot.  For the ball to have a chance to hit the pole it has to be on a low flight.  You have to finish low to hit the ball low. Eric narrowly misses on this shot, but he did hit the pole twice when the camera was off!

Short Game Clinic by Terry Dill

Following are some snippets from a short game clinic conducted by former PGA TOUR, Champions TOUR and European Senior TOUR member, Terry Dill.  The clinic was conducted at The Hills of Lakeway several years ago and I videoed some of the clinic.  Terry has been a friend and mentor of mine since 1972.  In fact, he was my first official "boss" as he hired me to work as a cart attendant at Lost Creek CC when I was a junior in high school.  It was also under his mentorship I qualified for the Champions TOUR Q-School finals in 2005.

In this video, Terry is sharing some of his short game techniques he learned from playing the game at a very high level for a number of years.  I was fortunate he shared with me many of his experiences and I utilize his techniques in my teaching of the short game and full swing too. 

I apologize for the video not being perfect but if you listen, you too will hopefully pick up some valuable information which will help improve your short game.

Drills to Maintain your Arm Structure

Maintaining your arm structure throughout the golf swing is very important.  The thought you want to have is to keep your elbows approximately the same distance apart from the very start of the swing to well past impact.  At the finish, the elbows may then come apart as the club completes the journey.

This is a sample of the arms separating at the top of the backswing, after impact and the finish.


DRILL 1

In the first drill, I am utilizing a small ball between the arms.  This particular ball is a small blow up plastic soccer ball.  You don't want a ball so big you can't grip the club properly.  I recommend using a short iron and start with small swings to get the feel.  In fact, I would start with chipping length swings and then move on the a half swing with some wrist hinge.  If your elbows separate at any point, you will drop the ball.  This will take several reps for you to get comfortable with the ball in place.  Stick with it and the payoff is huge.


DRILL 2

In drill number two, I am using a bungee cord around my upper torso.  You can adjust for size by simply tying a few knots in the cord.  The bungee should be tight enough for you to feel the resistance but not so tight you can't swing.  The bungee keeps the upper arms more connected to your torso throughout the swing.  If your elbows do separate the bungee will slide off your shoulders.  I recommend beginning with a short iron and after you have successfully hit some good shots, move on through the set.

Uneven lies call for adjustments in your set up and swing.  In this video I am discussing the effects and changes needed to successfully negotiate uphill and downhill lies.  In general when faced with any kind of uneven lie, maintaining your balance is key.  The more severe the lie, the more conservative I will be as far as how far I think I may hit the shot.

Now is the Time to Evaluate Your Game and Prepare for the Upcoming Golf Season

2018 is here!  There is absolutely no reason to wait until Spring to start thinking about how you will improve your game for the upcoming golf season.  Before you really know what to work on, I think it is smart to sit down and first evaluate your game from 2017.

I will provide you with a list of questions to help you begin your evaluation:

1.  How many rounds did you play this year?
2.  Do you know where the practice tee is?  Just kidding, how often did you practice?
3.  What did you practice the most?  Did you practice your weaknesses?
4.  Which club do you hit the best and worst?
5.  Have you been professionally fit for your clubs?
6.  What did your typical bad shot look like?
7.  Did you take any lessons this year?
8.  How often did you visualize your shots?
9.  How often did you stick with your pre-shot routine or do you have a routine?
10.  Did you obtain your golf goals this year?
11.  What clubs do you carry in your bag?
12.  Do you have a club in your bag you just can't hit?
13.  What was your lowest and highest score this year?
14.  Do you stretch or perform golf specific exercises?
15.  Did you try every tip you heard on The Golf Channel?  In one practice session?
16.  How many tournaments did you compete in this year?  Did you win any?

Now that you have answered these questions, you are ready to proceed.  By the way, if you came to me for instruction, these are just a few questions I would want answers to as well.  These answers help me lay out a game plan for your improvement.  The quickest way to improve is to identify your weaknesses and then set goals and objectives which are obtainable and sensible. 

Here is a sample of objectives everyone can start right away to improve your game:

1.  Exercise and/or stretch daily.  There are many great websites which provide golf specific exercises and stretches.  I would focus on the exercises designed to strengthen your core.  Walking is another great way to get outdoors and keep you fit as well.  Obviously you should get physician approval before starting any exercise program.
2.  Go to the putting green daily.  Making putts is a habit that can be developed.
3.  Commit to a pre-shot routine for each shot you hit (even on the practice tee). 
4.  Stick with a swing or grip change.  It is so easy to go back to what was comfortable.
5.  Love every club in your bag.  There is no reason to carry a club which does not consistently perform.  Getting professionally fit for your clubs is the first step in eliminating variables in your game.
6.  Practice the short game more than the long game.

Again, this is just a sample of generic, obtainable and sensible objectives.  Whether you want to just have more fun on the course or you want to become more tournament tough for the upcoming year, your first step is to honestly evaluate the current state of your game and then design more personal objectives to match your desires.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend

The following story was written by a former work associate (Kelly Amidon) at the TPC at The Woodlands.  I came across his blog by accident recently and discovered this story about a long time friend, Rene Nino.  After leaving The Woodlands in 2001, the years went by and I too lost touch with Rene.  When I read the story, I became misty eyed and remembered the great times Rene and I had.  We become close friends and I spent many evenings at his home enjoying Virginia's great cooking and his awesome music collection.  He turned me on to some great smooth jazz and I love it to this day.  Below is a picture of Rene and I during the 1995 Shell Houston Open.  Rene caddied for me in both the 1995 and 1999 SHO's which I qualified to play.  I remember walking up the 18th fairway during the 1995 SHO and his fan club was quite large and vocal.  I know he enjoyed the attention.

Rene was well liked in the golf industry and I know he is missed.  I too, wish I would have stayed in better touch with Rene.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend


In May of 1991, I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in my hometown of Nacogdoches, TX and moved to the North Houston area to chase my dreams of becoming a professional golfer.  At the time, the Tournament Players Course in The Woodlands was the home of the Shell Houston Open.  The TPC course is amazing with an incredible practice facility.  This is where I planned to spend my days working on my game until landing my first job as an assistant golf professional.

My Dad, his wife, and three children lived in River Plantation, a country club community just North of The Woodlands.  Given my limited funds and no job, they allowed me to live with them until I gained employment and transitioned into my own place.  In a short period of time I found a job working as a bartender in the evenings at Panorama Country Club just North of my Dad’s home which left my days free to practice and play.  Plus this job gave me access to a course to play for free.

My early days in the Summer of 1991 were pretty care free.  I was up early hitting the gym before heading down to the TPC to practice.  One morning, a gentlemen walked up and introduced himself as Rene Nino’.  He complimented me on my swing and ball striking and we struck up a conversation.
Rene’ lived there in The Woodlands across the street from the 7th tee box of the TPC Course.  He worked from home with his wife Virginia along with their “4-legged” kids including dogs and cats.  This was the start of what became a great friendship with our love for the game of golf as the common bond.

Rene’s business included calling on golf course superintendents which offered a unique and valuable side benefit.  He was able to play golf weekly all over the Houston area in most cases for free or maybe for a simple cart fee.  And while his game wasn’t bad, there was definitely room for improvement.  That’s where our friendship blossomed because in exchange for me helping with his game, he would take me to play when our schedules matched up.

In early August, my fortunes took a turn for the positive when the TPC’s head professional, Garry Rippy, asked me if I would like to go to work for him as an assistant in the golf shop. My goal in moving to Houston was to find a club professional job, join the PGA of America, and go through its professional development program.  Garry was giving me the much-needed break to take the next step in following my dreams.  Needless to say, my answer was a resounding YES!
When I shared with Rene’, he was thrilled for me.  The added benefit of working at the TPC Course would be the playing privileges for me and guests.  While Rene’ played a lot golf and had a good relationship with the TPC’s Head Superintendent, it was one of the few places because of the prestige where he wasn’t able to play very often.  With my new job, that problem was solved.

A short time later, Rene’ offered me the opportunity to come and live with him and his wife Virginia.  He said since you work at the TPC, you might as well live down the street. Rene’ and Virginia lived in a big two-story home with two guest bedrooms upstairs…and no children.  It was a great deal for both us as he was able to play a lot more golf at the TPC, and my commute went from 30 minutes to 2.

For the next two years, Rene’ and Virginia became like another set of parents.  He would often join me in the early mornings at the gym before going our separate ways to work. We spent many hours talking golf, sports, and life.  He poured into me his knowledge of sales, business, and general street smarts, and in return I helped him as much as possible with his golf and fitness.
In the Fall of 1993, a position opened at Stonebriar C.C. in Frisco, TX.  While my time in Houston was great, this was an opportunity for advancement as I progressed through the PGA’s apprenticeship program.  It was a hard decision and ultimate move because I loved my time with Rene’ and Virginia and my job and home in The Woodlands.  While we stayed in touch, it was never the same and I will forever cherish my time with them.

Fast forward ten years and much had changed.  I had left the golf business to go into sales and was recently engaged.  My fiance’ lost her job due to the combination of the “Dot-Com” bust and the events of September 11, 2001.  Our nation was hit hard financially and the contract furniture industry was hit particularly hard.  I still had my job but with her recent loss, we were both up for a change.
That’s when the phone call came regarding a Sales & Marketing Directors position at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, TX…just minutes from The Woodlands.  My interview was a slam dunk and we signed a lease at an apartment the same day…just a few blocks from Rene’ and Virginia.  I was on top of the world!  To be back in the golf business in a sales capacity and to be reunited with my friends was incredible.
Unfortunately it was not meant to be because my fiance’ was terribly homesick after about six months.  We stayed through the balance of our one year lease and then moved back to North Dallas.  With our wedding looming in the near future, leaving Rene’ and Virginia a second time made the whole experience bitter-sweet.
Like my fist move to Dallas, the distance took its toll on our friendship which was compounded with my responsibilities as a newly wed.  We talked at length in 2005 after Hurricane Rita ripped through the Gulf Coast and up through Galveston into the greater Houston area.  While thousands had to evacuate from the coastal areas, Rene’ and Virginia opted to stay home and survived with no damage to their home…despite the incredible winds and falling debris.
As time passed, the phone calls became less frequent and the last time I can remember talking to Rene’ was the Summer of 2008.  I was driving back from UT in Arlington from an appointment when we talked and its like it was yesterday.  For the next six years, I prayed for them daily as they held a permanent spot on my prayer list, but life always seemed to get in the way of me picking up the phone or shooting an email…until December of 2014.
Early last December, I pulled together my various contact lists and created one comprehensive names list to send Christmas cards to.  While I sent a few physical cards to my immediate family, the rest received their card by email.  I was consciously aware that Rene’ was included on my list but didn’t think much about it…until after I pressed “Send” and my phone range shortly afterwards with a Houston number.
I naturally thought of Rene’ however his old cell was saved in my phone and this was a different number.  When I answered, the voice was immediately recognizable even after so many years.  Virginia was calling to explain that she received my email and I could tell by her voice that something was not right.  She broke down in explaining that Rene’ has died earlier in the year in their bedroom from a sudden brain aneurysm.  With the changes in my phone number since we last talked, she was unable to reach me.
I felt sick and shocked to think Rene’ had been gone for nine months and I didn’t know. Soon after, I made a trip to see Virginia to reconnect and to pay my final respects to a man who was for a time like a second Dad.  It was as emotional for me and Virginia as I expected it to be and yet I owed it to her and him for all they did for me.  I still pray for her daily for peace that only God can grant given the loss of a spouse.  And naturally I think of him with the expectation that someday we will see each other again in Heaven.

Closing Thoughts for My Readers:
If you have a strained relationship in your life that’s important to you, I encourage you to go and make it right.  If you’ve lost touch with a one time best friend, I encourage you to reconnect while you still have time.  Because, really…you don’t.

Sync or Swim (Drill to get your golf swing in "sync")

Since my previous post has to do with syncing your golf swing, I am re-posting this article and video which will explain the drill in detail.

My experience has shown me that a number of golf swing issues can be corrected just by getting your swing in sync.  If the lower body gets too active, you could be headed for disaster.  While you do want to engage the lower body, you want to do it responsibly.

This is a great drill which is easy to perform and will provide amazing results.

101 Uses for Alignment Rods (#???)

Below is a video of student Bob R. using two alignment rods to help improve his backswing.  Bob was taking the club too much outside on his backswing and it was causing him to be too steep.  His divots were deep and going left which was causing issues with his accuracy.  To help him get on track, I placed a rod about 2 inches outside his golf ball and at about a 30 degree angle.  I also placed a rod on the ground for alignment purposes.  It is important that both rods are parallel and the student is aligned correctly.  On his backswing he has to now take the club back slightly inside the rod by his ball or he will get tangled up.  On the downswing, he also has to avoid the rod by coming down more from the inside.  The result was Bob starting striking the ball much better and his accuracy really improved.  In his next round, he shot one of his lowest scores in quite some time!

Note of caution...always start with small swings when using alignment rods as to avoid inflicting injury.

Alignment rods are very helpful during the instruction process and following student practice sessions.  In these instruction sessions with student's Graham Marks (York College, NE) and Michael Gonzales (Lockhart High School) we used an alignment rod placed through the belt loops.  Both students were sliding the lower body too much toward the target on the downswing thus leaving the hands way behind.  By placing the alignment rod through the belt loops, they now have to focus on slowing the lower body down a bit so the arms can drop in front of them on the downswing.  If the hips slide too much the arms will get caught behind the rod and they will lose a belt loop.  We started with small swings to get the feel and then progressed to full swings.  We also shortened the backswing just a bit and it helped keep the arms in front.  Their accuracy improved immediately and  didn't lose any distance at all.

Note of caution:  any time you are using alignment rods you want to start slow as to not inflict injury.

You can Become a Better Putter!

I use many tools to help my students improve their putting.  I found this particular training aid about six months ago and I absolutely love it.  It's the TPM (True Pendulum Motion) from IXIA Sports.

The tool attaches to your putter and the two "arms" run on top of your forearms and under the arm pits.  You grip it from underneath the adjustable arms and you are now locked it to great putting.  It allows the stroke to be shoulder driven and the device will not allow the hands to take over.  I find it really helps with improving your path, putter face and stroke rhythm.

After using the tool for several minutes, you can remove it and it is amazing how you can still feel the same stroke.  With a little practice you can replicate the same feel and you will putt better (I know because I use the tool weekly).

Training Aid Review... "The Power Sleeve" from SKLZ

The Power Sleeve from SKLZ.com is a weighted sleeve which attaches to your golf club with velcro.  I love the Power Sleeve as it is heavy enough to feel the weight, but not so heavy you can't swing it efficiently.  You can actually hit balls with the sleeve attached to the club and I find this very beneficial in developing your swing.

The Power Sleeve can be used for many purposes:
1.  Strength building
2.  Improve swing plane
3.  Build "lag" into the downswing
4.  Improve release after impact
5.  Achieve a full, balanced finish

Below is a video of my 12 year old student, Jessica Zhao, using the Power Sleeve.  Notice how she gets the club "loaded" or "set" at the top of the swing.  There is almost a slight pause at the top as the weight naturally allows her wrists to hinge.  Prior to using the Power Sleeve she tended to release the club too early or cast the club from the top.  Now her hands fall into place and the weight follows to a beautiful finish.


Following are a few pictures of the key areas of improve in Jessica's golf swing.

The left arm is comfortably extended and the wrists are perfectly hinged.
There is also a nice shoulder turn at the top.

On the downswing, she has retained the angle formed between her left arm and wrists.
I would like to see a bit more leg drive at this point.

There is a full release of energy as her right arm has extended through the impact zone.

Full, balanced finish.
